The Book:

Any Other Name by Emma Newman.

Any Other Name (The Split Worlds, #2)

Thought-provoking, wonderfully inventive, and filled with treachery and mystery, the soaring second book in the Split Worlds Series pulls Cathy, Will, Max, and Sam deeper into the twisted world of Fae-touched society.

Cathy has been reluctantly married into the Iris family and moves to Londinium, the magical Nether reflection of London, setting her on a collision course with the restrictive, high-pressure social circles that demand propriety and obedience, things the vocal and free-spirited Cathy cannot abide. Will, meanwhile, is trying to find a compromise for his new bride, but whispers in his ear are urging him towards dark deeds…

Sam, determined to dive back into the world of Exilium to rescue innocents, crosses paths with Cathy and Max once again as Max and the gargoyle uncover more information about the mysterious Agency and the chain of events that wiped out the Bath Chapter. Sacrifices, terrible deals, and dreadful revelations mark this second installment of Emma Newman’s wondrous Split Worlds series.

Any Other Name is book two of the Split Worlds series by Emma Newman. Check out my posts from the Between Two Thorns read along before reading the Any Other Name posts.

This is my week one post for Any Other Name!

Week 1: Monday 6th June, Chapters 1-6, hosted by Lisa at Over The Effing Rainbow.

1. Cathy’s wedding day arrives, and her mother wasn’t joking when she said she’d make sure Cathy would go through with it. What are your thoughts/feelings on Cathy’s forced circumstances?

Hmmm… Nope, nope, nope NOPE, NOPE! Big Ol’ NOPE! I do not like the arranged marriage thing at all! Drugging her! SERIOUSLY! *walks off swearing*

2. On the way to the ceremony, we get some surprising insights into Cathy’s father’s background and why he treats his daughter the way he does. Does this change your opinion of him at all? If so, what do you make of him now?

RUBBISH! My opinion remains unchanged! Regardless of his backstory, he’s still an arse for treating Cathy this way! In fact it makes him MORE of an arse for having a perceived  possible empathy for Cathy’s plight! I’ll say it again! ARSE!

3. The wedding itself, and the honeymoon, brings some unavoidable truths with it, for Cathy and Will both. Does their behavior in this part of the book change what you think of them/their outlook?

What little hope for Will I harbored in book one is quickly crumbling! I hope he gets run over by a bus whilst he walks off his anger and despair at Cathy! Self centered little shit!

I think I’ve touched on the major points to address in these chapters, but as always, feel free to add anything else you think is important!

The new curse that’s been put on Cathy sounds ominous, Can the Sorcerer possibly remove it do we think? Will he even want to when he finally catches up with Cathy again?

What about Sam, Is he doomed to be a well meaning puppy with no sense what so ever? Will he become a full on slave to the Fae out of sheer ignorance?

… and finally – Doesn’t the Sorcerer seem awfully chummy with Lavundula! A Sorcerer… friendly with a PUPPET! Sounds fishy! (and sounds like it’s been the case for a good many years!)

Anyone else have any thoughts, different or other? Let me know.

Well that’s my week one post for Any Other Name… Look out for Weeks two through four over the coming weeks!

  1. I found the relationship between Ekstrand and Lavandula a bit surprising too. After all that scorn and distaste for puppets, here’s the Sorcerer making all this effort. I don’t know what to make of it!

  2. I’m bemused that everyone seems to have very similar reactions to the opening chapters. I feel like I shouldn’t be, but there we are.

And yes! What is going on with Ekstrand and Lavandula? That certainly doesn’t fit the whole “All people from the Nether are Puppets and horrible people by default” vibe he gave off in the first book. Though admittedly I think that was largely Max and I think it’s safe to say that Max is not the most unbiased of people, even if his assertion matches up to what we’ve seen so far. (I mean, that curse was just horrid and on top of what Cathy’s mother did to her between books. *shudders* You can’t really fault Max for being so distrustful of Cathy.)

But there are many questions about how this all hangs together yet to be answered and I think a good many of them circle around Ekstrand. Or at least the Sorcerers in general. They do seem to be key in the whole matter.

  3. Holy moly, this week has got us all in a fury. I was so mad at both Cathy’s parents, and Will! I agree, any good will he earned with me has gone out the window. I think my opinion of him plummeted to a new low this week!
