Late Eclipses by Seanan McGuire. (October Daye #4)
“October “Toby” Daye, changeling knight in the service of Duke Sylvester Torquill, finds the delicate balance of her life shattered when she learns that an old friend is in dire trouble. Lily, Lady of the Tea Gardens, has been struck down by a mysterious, seemingly impossible illness, leaving her fiefdom undefended. Struggling to find a way to save Lily and her subjects, Toby must confront her own past as an enemy she thought was gone forever raises her head once more: Oleander de Merelands, one of the two people responsible for her fourteen-year exile.
Time is growing short and the stakes are getting higher, for the Queen of the Mists has her own agenda. With everything on the line, Toby will have to take the ultimate risk to save herself and the people she loves most—because if she can’t find the missing pieces of the puzzle in time, Toby will be forced to make the one choice she never thought she’d have to face again…”
~ Goodreads Description.
This is book four! (As with all October Daye books, this will be a re-read for me!)
Previously on October Daye…
Toby, a Detective/Knight Changeling (Half human/Fae) spent 14 years as a fish after a case she was working went sideways. After emerging back into the world she spent time hiding from everyone living a mundane life. Working at a Safeway on permanent night shifts. After The Countess Evening Winterrose Is found murdered, Toby is sucked back into Fae life. Forced to solve the murder or die trying! Oh, and Tybalt does her a solid even though he is her biggest frenemy!
Later, Toby is sent on a mission to the neigbouring County of Tamed Lightning—otherwise known as Fremont, CA. She’s tasked with checking up on her liege Lords Niece Countess January O’Leary – But strange things are happening in Tamed Lightning, people are dropping dead mysteriously – more worryingly the Night Haunts are ignoring the bodies! Mystery, Death and Computers make life for Toby tough and Toby finds technology difficult at the best of times. Tybalt tags along… which puzzles Toby.
Then – Toby comes face to face with her Fetch. Her fate seems sealed, but despite this – Toby rushed headfirst into danger to save the children of Fae, Changeling and Human alike from Blind Michael and his Wild Hunt – learning secrets long buried along the way. Oh, and it seems Tybalt knows a secret – but isn’t going to tell Toby, she has to figure it out for herself!
The Questions for Week One of the SF/F Read Along;
1. Where Toby goes, trouble soon follows… Lily’s fallen ill, and a blast from Toby’s past might be making an impact if signs are pointing where they appear to be. Do you think this is really Oleander’s work?
It would be quite the co-incidence if it wasn’t! Oleander or a clue to Oleander has popped up twice now – That can’t mean nothing!
2. If one unpleasant surprise wasn’t enough, Toby has two to deal with thanks to the Queen making her the Countess of Goldengreen. Given the timing, do you think this is a coincidence? What might the Queen be up to?
Tybalt said it best, The Queen is obviously setting Toby up for some kind of fall from grace. Let’s face it, Queenie isn’t exactly a fan of Toby – or Changelings in general. Whatever her end game is, it won’t be pleasant!
3. Speaking of possible coincidences, this might be the first time Toby’s turned to the Luidaeg only to find her unavailable. What do you think Toby’s chances are of getting through whatever’s coming without her, for once?
Toby will get through, surely! After all there’s loads more books after this. 😉 But the real question is will Toby and her friends and allies come through whole and unscathed! By the sounds in the background, The Luidaeg was somewhat busy… busy with what? Who knows, maybe we will find out eventually. But the relationship The Luidaeg has with Toby is precarious and almost parental… It could be that The Luidaeg is trying to get Toby to survive on her own – or it could be that she CAN’T help Toby! The Luidaeg is after all a SEA witch whereas Lily is a freshwater being. Maybe she’s unable to help out!
4. We get a look at Toby’s past, quite literally, as Karen visits her in a dream. Apparently Toby’s history with Oleander goes back further than she realises. What was your take on the ‘remembered’ encounter between Oleander and Amandine?
It’s interesting to get to see a flash of Toby’s past. Is this the first time we get to see Toby’s mother? I’m also interested in finding out just why Toby doesn’t consciously remember that time… It would kind of stand out after all – how often would you witness your mother being a total badass like that!
5. Time for tidbits! Did anything else about the events in this section stand out to you? Do you have any predictions at this point for what might happen from here?
Lily is sick… Oleander is back in the picture… Luna is down. Not a god time to have a name that starts with L! But what about Oleanders old partner in crime? Will Sylvester’s wayward brother reappear?
Walther is a new face, what do we think of him so far? May has a girlfriend – I like her – Jazz seems cool! Where did Spike go? When will Toby find the time to visit Goldengreen? Aaaarrrrrgh! There’s so much set-up in this weeks chapters and not enough progress to go on yet!
Well, week One is already moving swiftly. What ever happens next will certainly be trying for Toby!
