Review: No Good Dragon Goes Unpunished by Rachel Aaron. (Heartstrikers #3)

Finally, It’s here! Book #3 of the Heartstrikers series – No Good Dragon Goes Unpunished by Rachel Aaron! I have been looking forward to this for so long, but now it’s out! (Here in the UK anyway 😉 ) August 5th as an ebook and (hopefully) print format! (An Audio book version will follow in September).

I got to read it early *smug overload* and I loved it! Want to know more? Then read on for my quasi-review.

Mild Spoilers beyond this point!

[Review for book #3 based upon an advanced copy which I beta-read for the author.]

I cannot enthuse enough about this book or the Heartstriker series! If you’re new to the series, check out book #1 and book #2 first before reading any further as I’m about to look back at what’s happened previously in the Heartstriker series… (I did say there might be spoilers!)

The Heartstriker series began with book #1 Nice Dragons Finish Last (NDFL), and is a fantastic, brilliant series that is set in a futuristic yet familiar world. Blending elements of Sci-Fi with Urban Fantasy, Rachel Aaron has skillfully blurred more than one line between multiple genres. NDFL set up and toured a future Earth, a few decades after an Asteroid strike brought back the long forgotten Magic and Spirits from humanity’s past back into the world – wreaking havoc and devastation in it’s wake. Humanity is still adapting to the new order of things on the planet – amongst them are Dragons! Oh yes, Dragons are real.

NDFL Introduced us to Julius Heartstriker, the youngest of his Dragon Clutch and indeed his clan. Kicked out by his mother Bethesda and forced to make a name for himself – he meets and teams up with Marci Novalli, a human mage. Together they take a wild ride through and under the DFZ (The Detroit Free Zone) to try and prove that Nice Dragons Don’t Finish Last!

In book #2 One Good Dragon Deserves Another (OGDDA), Julius and Marci are business partners, struggling to make a profit in the DFZ when adventure comes calling again! OGDDA is just as much Marci’s story as Julius and we see both characters evolve and grow – reaching unknown levels of potential. There’s also a hell of a lot of action and intrigue as rival Dragon Clans, Seers and Spirits play an elaborate game of chess – with Julius and Marci amongst many others playing as pawns on the game board!

Finally though, we now have book #3 No Good Dragon Goes Unpunished (NGDGU). If you love the Dragons in books 1 & 2, hold on to your hats as NGDGU cranks the dial up to 11! We finally get to meet so many more Heartstriker Dragons as the action switches mainly to Heartstriker Mountain.

Julius has toppled the old Heartstriker power structure by wielding the last unclaimed Fang of The Heartstriker and  defeating his mother and is trying to establish a council of three to replace Bethesda.

This council requires ALL of the clan to vote on who should take one of the council seats – which leads to a political campaign (Claws, Teeth and C4 explosives) the likes of which has never been seen! Now he must navigate Dragon familial politics and intrigue and survive long enough to make his plans a reality!

Marci is also getting to grips with her new station in life, bonded to a powerful spirit – but others have also taken an interest in her development and rise…

Then there’s Chelsie! We finally get a hint as to what happened in China. Begin to see the depths of her struggle and burden as the Heartstriker Clans Punisher. NGDGU is equally very much the story of Chelsie too.

Chelsie… Total Badass!

I hope you all remember your alphabet, because NGDGU has Dragons from clutches A through J. This book is full of Intrigue, backstabbing and power-plays with teeth. Of course, fan favourite Bob is still running around – along with his pigeon. It’s all awesome!

When Julius overthrew his mother and took control of his clan, he thought he was doing right by everyone. But sharing power isn’t part of any proper dragon’s vocabulary, and with one seat still open on the new ruling Council, all of Heartstriker is ready to do whatever it takes to get their claws on it, including killing the Nice Dragon who got them into this mess in the first place.

To keep his clan together and his skin intact, Julius is going to have to find a way to make his bloodthirsty siblings play fair. But there’s more going on in Heartstriker Mountain than politics. Every family has its secrets, but the skeletons in Bethesda’s closet are dragon sized, and with Algonquin’s war looming over them all, breaking his clan wide open might just be the only hope Julius has of saving it.

~ Goodreads Description.

I. LOVE. This series! Hopefully you will as well! Despite getting and reading a beta version of this book to read before release, I HAD to pre-order the finished Kindle version – and I’ll be ordering the Print version too when it goes live on Amazon to add to my collection.

I’ve rated NGDGU and the two previous Heartstriker books as 5 stars on Goodreads.

[I was honoured to have been chosen as a Beta Reader for this novel by the author. This review was based upon a Beta (uncorrected proof) version of the book. I was not required to post any reviews based upon this reading – but I am, because it’s GOOD!]
